Artist's Statement
I seek to connect the past to the future. I am simultaneously reaching forward to humanity’s future among the stars and backward to the ways my foremothers made their marks upon the world. Using techniques traditionally denigrated as womens’ work, I explore the stars. My approach to the empyrean is unapologetically feminine as I carve out my place in a world steeped in the masculine.
Particularly, black holes have held my fascination since I was young and are a recurring subject in my art. What once filled me with fear I now understand as part of a life cycle beyond our understanding yet echoed on our little blue marble.
I am also inspired by Christian esotericism and Gnosticism and other ancient ways of understanding the world such as astrology and alchemy.
I use crochet and other fiber arts primarily, though my methods are eclectic. Lace, color, and iridescence are heavily featured in my work. I also enjoy exploring the materials I work with and pushing them to their limits, using them in nontraditional methods and combinations.
